The Gemstones Albisia Uses — Hand-Picked for Quality and Beauty
Pearls
Pearls are the only gemstone created by a living organism — and that organic origin is what makes them so uniquely beautiful. At Albisia, we work with natural and cultured pearls that are selected for their luster, surface quality, and shape. The inner glow of a fine pearl — what is called its orient — cannot be replicated by synthetic materials. Pearls bring softness and elegance to a design, and they pair beautifully with gold filled, solid gold, and sterling silver. We use pearls in both ready-to-wear pieces and custom jewelry commissions.
Sapphires
While most people picture a deep royal blue when they think of sapphires, these corundum gemstones come in an extraordinary range of colors — from cornflower blue to vivid pink, orange, yellow, and the highly sought "padparadscha" — a soft salmon-pink that is among the rarest colors in the gemstone world. Albisia selects sapphires with exceptional color intensity and clarity, looking for stones that hold their saturation in different lighting conditions. Blue sapphires are a classic choice for custom engagement rings and fine jewelry; fancy-colored sapphires bring a modern, unexpected quality to bespoke designs.
Tanzanite
Tanzanite is one of the most geologically remarkable gemstones on Earth — found in only one location in the world, a small area at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Its trichroic nature means it displays different colors depending on the viewing angle: deep violet-blue, burgundy, and bronze-green all within the same stone. Albisia is drawn to tanzanite for exactly this quality — its depth and complexity reward attention. Fine tanzanite is considered rarer than diamonds by some gemologists, and its limited geographic origin means supplies are finite. We select tanzanites with strong blue-violet saturation and good clarity for use in statement and custom pieces.
Tourmaline
Few gemstones offer the color range of tourmaline. From the neon greens and blues of Paraiba tourmaline (among the most valuable gems per carat) to deep watermelon tourmalines that show pink at the center and green at the edges, to rich indicolites and rubellites — tourmaline rewards adventurous collectors. Albisia loves tourmaline for its individuality. No two stones are the same, and the more unusual the color or phenomenon, the more it speaks to the design-led sensibility at the heart of the brand. We source tourmalines that are genuinely striking — stones that make you stop and look twice.
Turquoise
Turquoise has been revered by cultures across the world — from the ancient Egyptians to the Aztecs to the Navajo — for thousands of years. Its opaque sky-blue to blue-green color is unlike anything else in the mineral world, and the finest natural turquoise has a vibrancy and depth that treated or synthetic stones simply cannot replicate. Albisia selects natural, untreated or minimally stabilized turquoise for its distinctive character — stones with good color and minimal matrix for a clean, modern look, and stones with beautifully veined matrix for a more organic, artisan quality. Turquoise brings warmth and history to any design.
Sourced With Intention
Every stone in an Albisia piece has passed through Albisia's hands and met her standard. She attends gemstone shows and maintains close relationships with a select group of trusted dealers — people who know her eye and bring her stones worth seeing. This kind of curation takes time. It cannot be automated or delegated. But it is the only way to ensure that what goes into your jewelry is genuinely exceptional.
When you wear an Albisia piece, you are wearing a stone that was chosen — not just purchased. That distinction matters to us, and we believe it matters to the people who wear our jewelry.

Why Gemstone Selection Matters
At Albisia, every gemstone we work with has been personally selected by Albisia herself. This is not a small detail — it is central to everything we make. Most jewelry brands source stones through intermediaries or purchase from catalogs. At Albisia, we attend gemstone shows and work with a carefully curated network of trusted dealers, evaluating each stone individually before it ever becomes part of a piece of jewelry.
What we are looking for goes beyond the standard 4Cs. We are looking for life — the depth of color, the way light moves through the stone, the character of its inclusions, the feeling it gives when you hold it. A stone that doesn't move us doesn't make it into our collection. The result is a curated selection of natural gemstones that are exceptional not because a certificate says so, but because we know they are.
The Natural Gemstones We Use
Emeralds
Emeralds are among the most coveted gemstones in the world, prized for their rich, deep green — a color that comes from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium within the beryl crystal structure. No two emeralds are alike. Natural emeralds almost always contain inclusions — what gemologists call a "jardin" (garden) — which are a sign of authenticity, not imperfection. Albisia selects emeralds for the depth and saturation of their green, choosing stones that carry genuine presence and warmth. Emeralds are available for custom and bespoke jewelry commissions.
Rubies
The ruby is the stone of passion and vitality — a deep red corundum that has been treasured across cultures for millennia. The finest rubies display a vivid, slightly bluish-red known as "pigeon's blood," a color so rare and intense that truly exceptional rubies command prices that rival diamonds. Albisia hand-selects rubies with exceptional color saturation and clarity, favoring stones that feel alive rather than dark or flat. Whether set in gold for a statement ring or used as an accent in a custom design, a well-chosen ruby commands attention.
Diamonds
Diamonds are the hardest natural material on Earth, and at Albisia, we choose them with the same personal scrutiny we apply to every stone. Rather than purchasing on paper alone, Albisia evaluates diamonds for the quality of their cut and the way they interact with light — because a beautifully cut diamond will always outperform a higher-graded stone that was cut to maximize weight rather than brilliance. We work with diamonds in custom engagement rings, bespoke fine jewelry, and accent settings across many of our designs.
