Every gemstone in an Albisia piece was chosen by Albisia herself. That is not a small detail; it is central to everything we make. Most jewelry brands buy stones through intermediaries or from catalogs. Albisia attends gemstone shows and works with a small circle of trusted dealers, looking at each stone on its own before it becomes part of a piece.
What she is looking for goes beyond the standard grading. She is looking for life: the depth of color, the way light moves through the stone, the character of its inclusions, the feeling it gives in the hand. A stone that does not move her does not make it into the collection. The result is a selection of natural gemstones that are exceptional not because a certificate says so, but because she knows they are.
The stones we use
Emeralds
Among the most coveted gemstones in the world, prized for a deep green that comes from traces of chromium and vanadium in the beryl crystal. No two emeralds are alike. Natural emeralds almost always hold inclusions, the jardin, which are a sign of authenticity rather than a flaw. Rubies
The stone of passion and vitality, a deep red corundum treasured across cultures for millennia. The finest show a vivid, slightly bluish red known as pigeon's blood, so rare that exceptional rubies rival diamonds in price. Albisia selects rubies with strong color and clarity, favoring stones that feel alive rather than dark or flat.
Sapphires
Most people picture royal blue, but sapphires come in an extraordinary range, from cornflower blue to pink, orange, yellow and the rare padparadscha, a soft salmon pink. Albisia chooses sapphires for color that holds in different light. Blue sapphires are a classic for engagement rings; fancy colors bring something unexpected to a bespoke design.
Diamonds
The hardest natural material on earth, chosen here with the same scrutiny as every other stone. Rather than buying on paper alone, Albisia looks at how a diamond is cut and how it plays with light, because a beautifully cut diamond outperforms a higher-graded stone that was cut to keep weight rather than brilliance. Diamonds appear in custom engagement rings, bespoke fine jewelry and as accents across many designs.
Pearls
The only gemstone made by a living creature, and that organic origin is what makes them beautiful. We work with cultured freshwater, baroque and keshi pearls chosen for luster, surface and shape. The inner glow of a fine pearl, its orient, cannot be copied by synthetic material. Pearls bring softness to a design and pair well with gold filled, solid gold and sterling silver.
Tanzanite
Found in one place on earth, a small area at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Tanzanite is trichroic: it shows violet blue, burgundy and bronze green depending on the angle, all in one stone. Its depth rewards attention, and its single source means supply is finite. Albisia selects tanzanite with strong blue violet saturation and good clarity for statement and custom pieces.
Tourmaline
Few stones offer tourmaline's range: the neon greens and blues of Paraiba, watermelon stones pink at the center and green at the edge, deep indicolites and rubellites. Albisia loves tourmaline for its individuality. No two are the same, and the raw crystals in the fine necklaces are set exactly as they came out of the ground.
Turquoise
Revered for thousands of years, from the Egyptians to the Aztecs to the Navajo. Its opaque sky blue to blue green is unlike anything else in the mineral world, and fine natural turquoise has a vibrancy that treated stones cannot match. Albisia selects natural, untreated or lightly stabilized turquoise: clean stones for a modern look, veined matrix for something more organic.
